AMA

"AMA" translating to Seawomen are the female abalone free-divers of Japan. This way of life passed on from mother to daughter has echoed its way forward since the early 1700’s. Before wetsuits, scuba gear, fishing boats, the ama were pushing themselves 20-80 feet underwater scouring the sea floor for abalone, holding their breath for upwards of 4 minutes. This film follows a current group of AMA living and diving in Toba and asks what will become of this tradition as the members average age is 80 years old.
